Caves awarded Excellence Award at South Devon Oscar Ceremony

Top industry excellence 'Oscar' for Kents Cavern at the prestigious South Devon Excellence Awards last night

Devon's oldest visitor attraction, Kents Cavern in Torquay, was awarded South Devon's top excellence ‘Oscar' for best tourism attraction at the South Devon Excellence Awards last night.

The Torquay-based, family-run attraction, already holds numerous quality awards including Torbay's Best Attraction in 2005, the National Best Practice Forum's Business Excellence Award for attractions in 2006 and the regional tourism excellence award for Best Large Visitor Attraction in South West England in 2008.

Nick Powe is the fifth generation of the family to own and operate the business where the main attraction is the interpretation of an extensive underground prehistoric cave system. The cave has an international reputation as the oldest recognisable human dwelling in the British Isles and a gateway to the UNESCO Global Geopark.

Kents Cavern was shortlisted with two other multi-award winning attractions, Paignton Zoo and Pennywell.  The decision of the panel of experts to give the "gold" award to Kents Cavern was announced at a prestigious gala awards and dinner at South Devon College, Paignton on Thursday 19th November.

Commenting on his achievement, Nick Powe, managing director and owner of Kents Cavern said today: "We are all immensely proud and delighted to have been awarded this prestigious excellence award, particularly since there are so many other top quality attractions in South Devon.  Getting this award is very special for me and my family."

"We have invested a lot in recent years to raise the quality of the Kents Cavern experience.  But it's the personal touches that make visiting Kents Cavern unique; that's down to people who work here.  My staff work very hard to go just that little bit further and this award is fantastic recognition for how they are contributing to raising the quality of the tourism and leisure offer in South Devon."
