Kents Cavern Gains Purple Angel Dementia Accreditation

Our team members have been awarded their Purple Angel badges which we now wear with pride - a visible sign that we are Dementia aware and ready to offer support with any additional needs or requests during your visit.
This important step is part of our ongoing mission to ensure that our site is welcoming and accessible to everyone, whether you're exploring the cave or simply enjoying a visit to the cafe. Being part of the Purple Angel programme has helped us move closer to that goal.
How did we gain accreditation
In April 2025, we were proud to receive our Purple Angel training booklets, personally issued by Norman McNamara, the founder of the Purple Angel movement. These resources provided our team with valuable guidance on understanding Dementia - including how to communicate effectively, recognise emotional needs, and respond to behaviour with empathy and care.
This comprehensive training is now a core part of our onboarding process for all new staff. By embedding it into our team culture, we’re continuing our commitment to creating a space that’s inclusive, welcoming, and supportive for all visitors - especially those living with Dementia and their carers.
Our aim is simple: to be a place where every visitor feels safe, respected, and valued.
What is Dementia
Dementia is a collective term used to describe a range of progressive neurological conditions that affect the brain. It can impact memory, thinking, language, and behaviour, and often leads to difficulties with everyday tasks. While Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form, there are many types of Dementia, each affecting individuals differently. It’s important to remember that Dementia is not a natural part of ageing, and with the right understanding and support, those living with Dementia can continue to lead fulfilling lives.
